Job Title: Junior Counselor
FLSA Status: Non Exempt-Seasonal
Reports to: Summer Camp & Retreats Director
POSITION SUMMARY
With direction from the full time directors, a Junior Counselor lives with and assists the Senior Counselor in supervising a cabin of twelve campers, while assuring that the camper's health and safety are attended to at all times, and doing everything possible to assure that the campers have a good experience.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Live with and assist in supervising the activities of twelve campers at all times.
2. Keep the camper’s safety, health, hygiene, and cleanliness foremost in your mind and actions.
3. Assist with nightly cabin taps.
4. In any activity follow the policies and philosophies of Camp Wapsie and assure that the campers are also following them.
5. Participate in all of the courses, activities, classes, training, and planning sessions during the week of pre-camp.
6. Plans and run, with a committee, one special day.
7. Lead or assist in an activity area being responsible for equipment and all safety policies.
8. Responsible for the cleanliness of the living area, grounds around it, the activity area and camp in general.
9. Lifeguard in the pool guard rotation as directed.
10. Assist in completing all necessary evaluations including evaluations for campers that are old enough to return to camp as a participant in the Leadership Development Program.
11. Assist the senior counselor in programming activities for campers during cabin activity times.
12. Attend the weekly 1:00 PM Sunday staff meeting and share your ideas and distribute any organizational material for an activity that you are programming during the week.
13. Create and maintain a harmonious, positive working relationship with fellow staff, YMCA Camp Wapsie campers and participants.
QUALIFICIATIONS
- Must possess the ability to work with and motivate children between the age of 5 and 18.
- Must possess strong communication and leadership skills. Must possess knowledge of a specific activity area.
- Must be lively, enthusiastic, and energetic when interacting with the campers and staff.
- Enjoys working and interacting with people of all types and ages, with a special emphasis on children, modeling and utilizing the important core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
- Must have current First Aid and CPR certifications. Lifeguard certification and tower training encouraged.
