Job Title: Assistant Program Director
FLSA Status: Non Exempt-Seasonal
Reports to: Summer Camp Director
POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Summer Camp Director (SCD), the Assistant Program Director (APD) works with the rest of the Camp Wapsie Leadership Team to program activities, schedules and trainings for 200+ children and 35+ counselors per week from Sunday afternoon to Saturday morning, for 9+ weeks during the summer.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Assist in organizing and leading instructional sessions during the weeks of training.
2. Work with the SCD and Program Director (PD) to ensure the following are organized and appointed:
• Program activities for the campers from Sunday evening to Saturday morning in accordance with the philosophies of Camp Wapsie.
• Ensure all camp games and activities are organized and someone leads them. Ensuring that staff are ready for the activities.
• Have alternate programs & plans for every activity and time of day in case of an interruption in regular programming.
• Determine who will develop, implement, and lead the various camp programs & activities, including examples such as the meal programs, program staff introductions, campfires, chapel, critter talk, Nature Night, theme days, dance, parents program, and All Camp Game/Activity Slots.
• Organize or appoint someone to organize staff activities/moral boosters throughout the summer.
• Participate on a planning committee for one Special Day and help with other special day events as needed.
• Create staff placements for cabins & activity areas and make updates as needed.
• Help the other Program Staff with any needs they have to help their program succeed.
• Assist with the organization of staff onboarding, payroll and time off as needed.
3. Work with the Leadership Team to provide leadership and mentoring for staff including the following:
• Ensure that they are following Camp Wapsie philosophies and rules and doing their work as assigned.
• Set up regular check-in meetings with your assigned counselors. Review performance and evaluations with them as decided upon by leadership team.
• Work to resolve staff conflicts and keep an open line of communication with the leadership team.
4. Be in attendance at the weekly 1:00 PM Sunday staff meeting and assure that the staff has a schedule for the week and know and understand all of their assignments for the week’s activities and distribute your assigned materials that the staff will need for the week.
5. Is always available and willing to help and answer any questions unless unavailability is communicated to Camp Director &/or Assistant Program Director.
6. May begin the emergency procedure whenever necessary if Camp Directors are unavailable to do so and assist in keeping a close watch on any severe weather situations. Responsible for taking lead in a storm shelter during Basement Parties.
7. Assist the Camp Directors with the organization of the end of summer camp clean-up process and assist in checking all areas to assure that they are cleaned up properly.
8. Helps organize and provide leadership for special camp programs.
9. Create and maintain a harmonious, positive working relationship with fellow staff, YMCA Camp Wapsie campers and participants.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Must have strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
• Must have experience in programming activities for campers between the ages of 5 and 18.
• Enjoys working and interacting with people of all types and ages, with a special emphasis on children, modeling and utilizing the core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
• Must have current First Aid and CPR certifications. Lifeguard certification and tower training encouraged.
